HOMEF urges farmers to refuse chemical fertilizers

Mother Earth Health Foundation (HOMEF), has advised the country’s farmers to refuse the use of chemical fertilizers on their farms and to insist that these chemicals harm the soil and beneficial organisms.

HOMEF gave the advice in a statement issued shortly after a day of training for farmers in Benin City, capital of Edo state.

The statement, signed by its media / communications manager, Kome Odhomor, said that farmers would be exposed to the dangers of using chemicals in agriculture during the training.

It says in part: “Chemical-intensive agriculture is not only harmful to the soil, it also contributes to climate change and endangers the health of farmers and the environment.

“In an effort to increase soil fertility and yields through the use of chemicals, farmers unwittingly endanger their economic future and fear lifelong health problems.

“Frequent exposure to chemical pesticides can cause cancer and others”
neurological, immunological, respiratory and reproductive diseases. “

The group therefore advised farmers to take over agroecology, since natural fertilizers do not damage the soil, but rather nourish the soil.

It added: “The use of harmful chemicals and GMOs does not solve the problems we face with food shortages, but harms the soil and beneficial organisms.

“Natural fertilizers don’t represent
they damage the soil, but rather feed the soil. “
